Defender Pinball: Williams, 1982

This Defender pinball is in exceptional condition for a game of its age! I spotted it in the corner of the Arcade Warehouse lockup when picking up some boards for repair. After a bit of negotiation I managed to secure it in exchange for some repair work and some PCBs from my collection.

The game is in almost perfect condition. The only flaws are light wear on the playfield and a very small area of flaking paint on the backglass. All the original playfield parts are there and very few repairs have been done on the playfield. The game was missing the power driver PCB, so an untested one was bought from Justin Williams (thanks!).

Once the game was complete the restoration began!
The following was done as part of the restoration:
  • Everything was cleaned to perfectionist standards.
  • A complete set of playfield rubbers was fitted.
  • New plungers, links and EOS switches were fitted to all three flippers.
  • New connectors were fitted to the GI lighting circuit to replace heat damaged ones.
  • All playfield and backglass lighting was tested, cleaned and replaced where required.
  • All switches were tested and adjusted.
  • The coin mechanisms were converted to new 10p and 50p coins.
  • New Instruction/Game pricing cards were produced and fitted.
Now time to power the game up!
The following faults were found and fixed:
  • The switch matrix was hopeless! A faulty 7406, 4049 and 6821 were all replaced on the driver PCB.
  • Both left had side flippers were dead. After much head scratching the fault was traced to a broken connector on the plug connecting to the driver PCB.
  • Strange gameplay linked to locking/draining balls. Traced to the middle trough switch being intermittent, once the switch was replaced all worked properly.
If you have any Defender Pinball parts for sale please Email me.
I am currently looking for the following:
  • A NOS backglass. Must be perfect!
  • Round 'lander' targets with the Defender decals on them or just the decals.
