Atari Asteroids Boardset
Asteroids is a monochrome vector game released by Atari, Inc. in 1979, this game comprises of a single board plus the regulator/audio board.
The main board comes in two distinct types; the original layout (-1 thru -4) can use PROMs or ROMs for the game program, the later revision (-5 thru -6) can only use ROMs and has an extra row of chips in the middle of the board that was to get around parts shortages of the 7497 rate multiplier ICs. Typically this row is not populated (-5), if I come across one that is populated (-6) I'll add images. Note within these two board types each also has a number of minor layout revisions.
-1 uses PROMs on the original PCB layout and game program revision 1
-2 uses ROMs on the original PCB layout and game program revision 1
-3 uses PROMs on the original PCB layout and game program revision 2
-4 uses ROMs on the original PCB layout and game program revision 2
-5 uses PROMs on the revised PCB layout with 7497 rate multipliers and game program revision 2
-6 uses PROMs on the revised PCB layout with PROM rate multipliers and game program revision 2
Over time of course ROMs have been swapped around and a board may not have it's original ROMs/PROMs now.
